You now need a budget for Search Engines

14th November 2001

A number of important search engines responded to the slowdown in their advertising revenues by starting to charge to consider business websites for inclusion in their index.

While many still offer some free to submit options, now that pay for review is here companies do need a budget for search engines for any new websites they start and may need one to maintain position on existing websites.

Search engine budgetting

Current At 30/10/01
Some of the Key engines which are now charging include:

Search Engine / DirectoryCost
YahooUS$299
Altavista (1 URL)US$ 39
Excite.com (inc Looksmart)US$299
Webcrawler.com (on its own)US$149
Total:US$786

Summary of the Pay to submit
Search engines & Directories

Yahoo.com (human edited directory) US$299.00 one time, non-refundable fee

http://www.yahoo.com/
http://www.yahoo.co.uk/

There is a certain amount of time required to find which is the best section for your website and it would be a good idea to check where your competitors are and how they list in response to searches on your keywords.

While a free submit option remains this is probably unlikely to get you results, certainly it would not make sense if you could get the same results for free compared to the paid option, thus business must consider the paid option.
