"Cash cow" is a term applied to a product or service usually in a mature sector or in a mature state of it's life cycle. Cash cows are by definition profitable products or
business units perceived and used as a source of funds for the development or promotion of other offerings which are seen as having better future prospects. These other offerings may be referred to
as rising stars. (See Boston Consulting Group PIMS model).
