Affixing the CE mark to a product signifies that it complies with relevant European Community directives and product standards. For many products sold in the EU it is now mandatory, going into the year 2001, that the item carries a CE mark and the manufacturer must ensure that the product complies with relevant requirements. A number of directives and product standards have been taken into local legislation over the last years and more are on their way in either draft PR (provisional) or full release.
