Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. A.H. Maslow published a hierarchy of needs in 1970 (Harper & Row) in "Motivation and personality" which explained the hierarchy of human needs people are motivated to attain.

Especially useful for understanding how demand will change in emerging market Maslow proposed the hierarchy start with food and shelter and continue as follows:

Basic Sustenance which is Food, Shelter, Clothing then
Safety, security and comfort, then
Love, of one's self, others and family, then
Esteem, recognition or status, a feeling of importance, followed by the highest of Maslows Hierarchy of needs which is:
Independence, self realisation and a feeling of accomplishment.
