MRP: defined by the Sticky-Marketing.com monthly magazine

MRP the abbreviation for a "manufacturing requirements plan" or "materials requirements plan". MRP is often used as an abbreviation in production control terminology for a program within an MRP System (manufacturing resource planning system) which is run usually at least once a week (sometimes once a day or more) which interrogates the company computer system for sales requirements, stock replenishment requirements and the suchlike and outputs recommended build and buy plans.

MRP drives component buying requirements and flags up shortages to be expedited (chased) in order to meet demand.

Sophisticated MRP systems can produce automatic purchase orders and works orders if so programmed.

All computer based systems rely on the accuracy of the data stored on them so incorrect stock levels or lead times can devalue the output of such systems.

Some companies will produce their own manual master production schedule (MPS) and use an MRP program to generate future purchasing and materials requirements to enable them to produce to their MPS.
